What is the solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC)?
SHGC indicates the fraction of solar radiation that enters as heat. A lower SHGC = less solar gain; higher = more passive heat from the sun. Solar-control glass (e.g. Solarban) often aims for a lower SHGC.
In Quebec
On a very sunny façade in summer, a lower SHGC can help comfort. In winter, some solar gain is welcome — so choose by orientation, not a single rule.
